Mothering Sunday pop-up card
A bunch of paper flowers that springs up when the card opens. It looks impressive, but it's only a couple of cuts and folds.
In the UK, Mothering Sunday falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent, usually in March. This A5 pop-up card is built from a single sheet of A4 card with a separate insert, so it's sturdy enough to stand on the mantelpiece.
Step by step
- Fold the insert sheet in half to A5 with a scored, crisp fold.
- On the folded edge, draw two parallel lines about 3cm apart, each 4cm long. Cut along them through both layers.
- Open the insert and push the cut tab through to the inside, creasing it so it forms a little step that pops up when opened.
- Cut out flower heads, stems and leaves from your paper scraps. A small flower punch speeds this up.
- Glue the stems and flowers to the front of the pop-up step so they stand tall when the card opens.
- Fold the outer card to A5 and glue the insert inside, taking care not to glue over the pop-up step.
- Decorate the front and add a sentiment inside. Check the card closes flat before writing the envelope.
Pop-up cards stay flat, so they usually fit Royal Mail's Letter size if they're under 5mm thick. More in the cardmaking guide.
